This End of Year, Join Us in Supporting DC Families by Providing Essential Services image

This year, we celebrated 45 years of service and the 95th birthday of our founder, Dr. Ann B. Barnet, a reminder of how far we’ve come and how deeply our mission continues to matter.

For decades, The Family Place has been a lifeline for low-income and immigrant families in Washington, DC, helping them meet basic needs, learn, and succeed. Yet today, more families than ever are struggling to afford essentials like food, diapers, and clothing while trying to provide safety and opportunity for their children.

In the past year alone, The Family Place has served nearly 2,000 families, parents, and caregivers who turn to us in moments of uncertainty and hope.

Our Emergency Support and Case Management Services provide immediate assistance, connecting families with food, diapers, health insurance applications, support for appointments, and other ongoing guidance. These services help parents stay stable and continue participating in our other programs, including English classes, job training, and early childhood education.

Many of our participants share stories like Suyapa’s, who found The Family Place through a friend three years ago:

I learned about The Family Place through a friend, and for the past three years it has become a true support system for me and my two children. During a very difficult period when I lost my job, The Family Place helped us with food, diapers, and other essentials so I could keep my home stable while searching for work.

I’ve also taken English classes and joined the HIPPY program with my daughter when she was two years old, both experiences that helped us grow, learn, and stay connected. In moments when I didn’t know how we were going to manage, The Family Place stood with us with kindness.

Programs like these are so important for families like mine. They help us get through hard times, learn new skills, and take steps toward a better future. At The Family Place, I feel supported, safe, and deeply grateful.
